A redneck is anyone considered backward, a hick, intolerant of other's opinions, attitudes, or backgrounds, or ignorant or without social graces. The term comes from people who work outside most of the time. The back of their neck gets burned red by the sun. While the stereotype redneck comes from the south, in truth they can be found all over the country, in urban and rural environments, and can be rich, middle class, or poor.

The last group of people you can verbally abuse and still be considered politically correct. Farmers and other outdoor workers who work in the sun all day get a sunburned neck in back. So they are not so affectionately called rednecks, despite the fact that they feed us.

'Redneck' is a derogatory term roughly equivalent to "hick" and the opposite of urbane, classy and so on. It refers to the sunburned nck that is basically inevitable when you spend all day sitting on a tractor.
The Ben Folds Five had a great song called "Your Redneck Past" on the album 'The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner'.

I come from Dallas and the surrounding areas...were most hicks/rednecks reside. I even consider my dad and my uncle rednecks. I don't think it is entirely derogatory....guess you need to know and love one to think that way.

A hillbilly. The term was coined when farmers worked the fields all day and the backs of their necks got red from the sun.

well, i think the expression originally came from how the necks of men who did hard manual labor all day were red, sunburned. I guess the understanding of it is that these people had little money and normally came from the south and the culture there.
