does your system recognise it ? if no
open the box and check the cables are connected properly .
if does go to device manager and uninstall and reboot , upon reboot windows will find it and reinstall it.
if still no luck then the drive is ready to recycle ,and get a new one

if someone already hasn't told you already, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the cd-rom device drivers? is it under warrenty still? there basically isn't too much you can do unless you want to take it to a local tech, and in the long run might cost you more than just buying a new one. another issue might be with the way you have the ribbon cables hooked up inside the computer, is it sharing any other devices? hope that helps.

Had the same problem, sorry to say it but your cd drive is probably knackered, i took mine to two different computer shops and got the same response.
I bought an external cd/dvd drive, very good, very fast, just plug it in a usb port on the back of your computer and off you go, no installing, no taking it apart, no expensive support guys, just plug it in and go.

Yes, sounds like the CD ROM is broke. DVD burners are cheap these days and if you know what you are doing are easy to fit. Are you able to do this?
Don't take to to anywhere like PC World as they charge a fortune.

your settings could be messed up, go to system/device manager/ide controllers/primary ide controller. double click on this and the advanced settings should be device 0 transfer mode dma if available current transfer mode dma 5. below this is device 1. device type auto detection. transfer mode dma if available. then go back to the device manager and under the secondary ide channel under advanced the device 0, device type should be set to auto detection.transfer mode ultra dma mode 2. decive 1 device type set to auto detection, transfer mode p10 only. current transfer p10 mode. i know all this may seem like a headache but it might be the problem just make sure the settings are as i have written them. if it doesnt help get a new optical and fit it yourself if you feel confident enough

invest in a paper clip (found in most high street haber dasheries) and give it a good poking about. Failing that try the old turn it on and off again rouyine to see if that does any good. When that inevitably fails try crying and maybe some kind passing nerd will take pity on you and fix your problem.
good luck

open the side of the conputer and check the connections to the CDROM. If intact buy a new CDROM off EBAY (probably no more than £5) and swop.

I should think that you've got some dirt on your laser lens. Have you got one of those CD lens cleaning disks?
