I am planning on going to college to study to be a Veterinary Technician this coming semester. I would like to know a general overview of what is done once you have job to go to after graduation. I would also like to know what schedule they keep and salary they tend to get. Just a general overview of the carrer if possible.

You'll work alongside the vet at first: restraining the pets, clipping toenails, cleaning ears, getting/reading fecal samples and temperatures, etc. Vet techs also are licensed to do teeth cleaning, intubation, administer IVs... more invasive things. Some vets I've worked for have allowed their techs to actually perform minor surgeries such as neutering or declawing, although I don't believe that's technically legal.

Schedule is usually office hours through the week - 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 or 6:00 p.m. Many offices are open on Saturdays until noon or so. If there's boarding at your office, you may have to come in to walk and feed the pets, but they usually delegate those tasks to kennel workers or vet assistants.

I don't know about salary. I'd say you're going to start out around -$26 to $28,000.

Vet Tech can be a rewarding career if you really enjoy being around/helping animals. Some things you must realize is that some Veterinarians will treat you like crap (won't appreciate your degree) and so you need to be strong around them. Also, you will frequently get the cruddy jobs of cleaning cages, changing dressings on animals and other "menial" type jobs. Your schedule should be pretty much an 8-5 Monday thru Friday (with an occasional Saturday) and the salary is probably going to be around $20K/year.

After you finish your training and have a job, you will need as much experience as possible. As you get more knowledgeable by actual hands-on, your salary will be commensurate with your experience. You'd probably only begin with about $25,000. If you are in a big city and the Vet's demand high prices, then you will make more money. Don't expect too much though in the beginning.
