i want to switch phones but old phone has non-existent service?

ok i currently have a verizon wireless cell phone. about 2 years ago, our family had at&t wireless [which is now cingular, i think]
we kept our old phones and i want one of the old phones but im not sure if it will work if the service it had no longer exists.
is it possible?

No older phones from AT&T will not work on Cingular or Verizon.

If it is a GSM phone, it would work for Cingular, but you'd need a Cingular SIM card. It will not work for Verizon.
