I was amazed when I heard some white people saying that black folks are racist for having their own TV channels and stuff... I was like excuse me?
AS a black girl I cant go to a "white " hair salon coz these women just woulndt know what to do with my hair! How many white woman know how to do cornrows ?

I pick up Elle magazine its talking about tanning and well I dont really feel concerned !

I watch Titanic /beautiful story, one of the best ever theres no one like me Ill still watch it but sometimes I need to see on tv stories with people I can relate to who are just like me... Familiarity

Simple as that , we dont do it because we are racist its because we think we that we have been represented pretty unfairly( and you know its true) in the medias so we need to take control, express ourselves with our own sensivity ,own views ,our own words

Like they say they want a WET or the other things blacks do. But thier only motive for it is just to see how black would react and not beause it's a need for it.

Because the only reason blacks have one was because of racism. 20 years ago Blacks were NOT shown on TV or things blacks wanted to see. So instead of complaining blacks are unrepresented in television someone makes a station just for that. Many people who start any business do so because their is a need for it. Their is no need for a station call WET because white people are well represented in TV. Seems it's just because blacks have one they should. Like Lifetime a station for women, because women want to see things for women. Spanish stations for Spanish speakers, their are stations for all kinds of people. For a WET the motive would be just because someone else does it not because it's a need for it. BET mostly show things blacks would watch, if their is a white station that blacks like watching then it would come on BET. BET has shows blacks like to watch, not a black only station.

The difference between BET and WET is one was form for a good reason and a need for one group to have shows they prefer to watch. The other station to form one only to see how the other group would react.

Here's how my dad (not me, but him) says that things like that are in a way, racists.

He says that black people are allowed to have things such as BET, United ***** College Fund, etc. and it's ok, because they're black. However, as soon as white people came up with a Caucasian College Fund, that didn't allow other races in, someone would have a problem, call it racist, and it would be a big ordeal that would eventually shut down.

I don't really agree with that, but I have seen it happen where I live. Though, around here, we've literally had traffic accidents become race issues, so take that with a grain of salt.

This was more of a statement ...than a question but I agree..there was a time and place where we needed to create our own venues and forums becuz middle or white America failed to acknownledge us....but with Hip Hop, Oprah, and Condeleeza Rice serving as Bush's mouthpiece...there is more diversity and cultural blending....there are white and asian girls with braids and cornrows in their hair...some of them are even growing dreads...you see white boys with dark fades and caesars....driving around with 20 inch rims on their cars....sound systems bumping....we as African Americans are trendsetters....we brought flava to the world...now we need to utilize this cultural influence into political and financial power ....help rebuild communities and strengthen families....while becoming the owners and partners in some of these fortune 500 companies.....as the diversity continues...you see Hispanics come up the way we did in the 60's and 70's eventhough some of them are more accepted than others especially if they look white.....Asians pretty much act caucasian especially the women who usually date white men with good jobs and/or affluent backgrounds....middle easterns and native Africans have it worse than anybody right now....especially if they are not Christians and dress different...kufi's, burkas, and turbans ....I think shows like Lost and movies like Crash show a more realistic view of life these days....not all White like Friends or all Black like a UPN sitcom.

People who equate black-focused media such as the BET cable network or Ebony magazine as tantamount to racism are being both ignorant and very xenophobic. This is unfortunate, and often stems from a lack of knowledge about the unique issues and characteristics of black individuals and the black community at large.

The beauty of American society is that it is the world's largest melting pot of so many beautiful races, ethnicities, and cultures. This is why we have so many different types of cuisine, literature, entertainment, and even scientific viewpoints available to us that we tend to take for granted.

However, some folks either don't care to want to know anything different from their own ways, or are scared or fearful of how other segments of society and the world at large differs from their own limited viewpoints. I have strong faith that the young people of our planet will soon look beyond color and religion and creed by using tools such as the Internet and faster travel to not just bridge differences, but to truly appreciate and celebrate the differences.

Vive le difference!

I understand and must agree. Although I must say i do think they sometimes do become a little racist when it comes to organizations that benefit only black people. I mean, you don't see organizations that provide finacial aid to only white people..

I so agree! Why doesn't Elle,Vogue,Glamor, have any beauty tips for Black women? Some parts of this country don't have Essence, Honey, and Ebony around them, I used to live in SC and they didn't have any magazines or salons that are for our type of hair.

I agree, everyone should have a channel they can turn to. White people have about a million channels so if black folks have one, why should anyone call that racism? They also have chinese and persian channels too, nothing wrong with it.

I agree, I think white people brought it on themselves by putting mostly only white faces on T.V.

I think you're missing the point.
A channel like BET actually has the word BLACK in it.
Ebony ect.
We whites AREN'T ALLOWED to label anything WHITE for fear of blacks lashing out about it.
Yet we have to see the word black everywhere as being "ethnic".
"Black is beautiful!" Know any white catch phrases? We aren't allowed to be proud, but everyone else is.
Especially since whites are dwindling more and more every year. This will become a bigger issue in the future, I predict.
