Lacrymosa is one of the settings for a Requim, which is a special mass for funerals. Since composers love setting the texts of masses to music, when they write music for a Requim, they often make the Lacrymosa section into a song. It means ruffly "tearful that day"- and is one of the sadder movements in the Requim mass.

You may know one of the most famous settings of the Lacrymosa from Mozart's Requim. For many years, I don't know if they still do it, people around the world would start Mozart's Requim at the moment the first plane hit the world trade center as a memorial. Since they did this all over the world at their own local time, the Requim would be sung constantly that day somewhere in the world. I did it for the first few years while I was in college, but now I'm unsure if my school has kept up that tradition.

Originally a section of Mozart's requiem mass. It is associated with 'tearful' or 'shedding tears'. The latin 'lacrimo' means 'to weep', 'shed tears'. The latin 'lacrimosus' means 'tearful', 'mournful', 'shedding tears'. Not having heard the Evanescence album I cannot comment on whether the title is appropriate. You might not think that listening to Mozart's requiem mass worthwhile but the music and choral work is absolutely outstanding (honest).

The are kind of a churchy band. According to Wikipedia, it means:

The Lacrimosa is a section of the Requiem mass. While the Lacrimosa is traditionally considered to be part of the Dies Irae hymn, the Requiem composers often create a separate movement in the mass for it.

It is largely believed that the music of the Lacrimosa were the last notes Mozart ever set to paper when working on his final composition, Requiem in D minor. The Lacrimosa is arguably the best and the most popular musical movement of the Mozart's Requiem.

Among other famous versions of the Requiem mass, the Lacrimosa is known to be the central dramatic part of the Requiem by Hector Berlioz.

The text:

Lacrimosa dies illa
Qua resurget ex favilla
Judicandus homo reus.
Huic ergo parce, Deus:
Pie Jesu Domine,
Dona eis requiem. Amen.
In literal translation (see also Dies Irae for references to other versions):

Tearful that day,
on which will rise from ashes
guilty man for judgement.
So have mercy, O God, on this person.
Compassionate Lord Jesus,
grant them rest. Amen.
A rhythmic translation:

Mournful that day
When from the dust shall rise
Guilty man to be judged.
Therefore spare him, O God.
Merciful Jesus Lord
Grant them rest. Amen.
