The Windows auto update icon should sort of look like a small yellow badge and will be located by the clock (systems tray). If you click on it, it will open a window and tell you there are new updates to load. From the sounds of what you have there, it does seem to be the auto-updater.

I use Windows XP Prof., an it is set on automatic updates. I don't have a time set for the auto updates. Plus I have checked off on my auto updates that Microsoft, advise me of a download that is ready for installation. I will get an icon in the bottom tray on my monitor. Only then do I allow the update to be either downloaded or installed.

Never in nine years or more have I see a clock icon. I would not open or update. Ignore or log off and reboot your system and see if it is still there.

Would not be surprised if it is an attempt by a hacker to take control of your system.

Plus I never wait for Microsoft to perform the auto updates. I always know that every second Tuesday of each month Microsoft has critical updates for release.

So I go to start, and open windows updates. And let Microsoft scan my pc for critical updates.

Hope that you have "WGA", genuine key for your platform. Microsoft, on my last updates checked my system four times during the download process to confirm that my key was valid.

Go to start and open Windows Updates and let Microsoft scan your pc for critical updates. If they don't show you critical updates to download then somebody is trying to get control of your system. If Microsoft has critical updates that you missed download them direct from Windows Updates. (This way you will know for sure about the clock in the try.

You know your own system. What other program you have running that you allowed auto updates, such as your firewall, antispyware or antivirus systems. etc. etc. (You should be able to recognize the icon that is trying to get you to open for an updated).

Wish you all the best.

Please excuse my english. French is my primary language

Yes, you want to install it. That's how I do it. You have apparently set up your auto update in a way that your permission is required before it is installed. The file has been already downloaded to your computer and needs your permission to install it. If you want it completely automatic, then you need to reset your auto update option to do so without your future permission.

The updates trying to install are not from Microsoft. Could be InstallShield or your FireWall.

I'd let'm in.
