For the reality show adicts of which I am one. Has anyone noticed that the majority of the Black contestants can't swim at all or very well?
Does someone have an explanation of this for me?

I noticed it on National Treasure, Amazing Race, and Survivor. I would love an explanation.

Thanks to anyone who answers and I apologize in advance if this observation offends you.

Someone said "Why does it matter" well aside from being curious it doesn't.

But I was terrified for the guy on National treasure that had taken 3 weeks of pool lessons and had to jump into the North Atlantic. It was frightening.

I have seen shows where they swim very well. If you ever watch Fear Factor, you will see. Good swimmers are usually people you have flat booties and a wide upper back (shaped like a 'T')

I think it stemmed from when the Whites took us from Africa and we couldn't swim or never learned how there-so a lot of those Africans died in the water. Nowadays, a lot of Blacks stay away from water. It has been like that for as long as I can remember. I can swim and have learned to rescue for that reason. A lot of my BLACK friends and family would go to the beach and just get their feet wet. And refused to take swimming in school therefore flunking Physical Education! Look at Fear Factor too! None of the Blacks won if there was a swimming contest of some sort on there! Look at professional swimming and ice sports too. None of them are Black! (I hear there are a couple of Blacks in Pro-Hockey now-very surprised to hear that) But I bet we swim in the showers and tubs because we have no fear of drowning there! Good question...
LOL & Be Good...=)

Because 1) more young white kids are exposed to swimming situations: country club, schools with a pool, rec league swim teams, or just out in the country - and 2) most young black kids are not going to swim in some waters that young white kids will: lakes, ponds, nasty looking stuff with creatures swimming in it etc. Therefore, whites start swimming at an early age and are used to it. Blacks are not, and as they get older, since they don't know how to swim and have a healthy respect for the water, they don't learn.

None taken. Except ... swimming? How would that affect the price of apples or whatever? Inner cities have lots of pools. Maybe TV is more insidious than you think. Showing you a skewered reality. Like Yahoo, you scroll and scroll and there's all these lame anwers. Then you catch a flicker of a real question after answering and changing screens and .... the sucker's gone!

Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. Abraham Lincoln suspended Habeus Corpus, thereby ignoring the structure. John F. Kennedy replaced right into a terrible womanizer who cheated on his spouse diverse circumstances. the eastern Internment Camps were a terrible mistake that FDR made, and maximum, except may I upload many of the more desirable hardcore Conservatives like Michelle Malkin, have a tendency to seem upon them with disgust. besides the undeniable fact that, maximum Presidents are considered upon with the large image in ideas. FDR wasn't proper, some distance from it. yet many recognize him as he further the U.S. out of the great melancholy and further us by WWII as between the more desirable conflict time presidents. And with the Internment Camps, reparations were rightfully made throughout the time of Reagan's presidency. would not make what occurred proper, yet when we continuously attempt to proper the wrongs of the previous, we will in no way get something executed for the destiny.

Because until recently, swimming has not been a priority of black culture. It was kind of taboo. It still kinda is. It was important in my family. We all learned how to swim with professional swimming lessons at a young age. This question does not offend me.

Noticed the same thing. Not sure if it is coincidence or some biologic/race issue. I would imagine it is probably coincidence since I haven't come up with any studies that back up any significant race deviations in who swims and who doesn't. I'll look around the net and see. Interesting question.

Might be they live in the city. All the black folks I know out here in rural America can swim very well indeed.
