Adding is the same for positive or negative numbers if the signs are the same. Add the way you always have and don't forget the sign at the end.

Adding a positive and a negative is a bit more work. Find which one has the greater absolute value (distance from zero). That tells you the sign of the answer. Then find the difference between the two.

When using integers, don't subtract. Add the opposite and follow the directions above.

Examples:

2 + 4 = 6
-2 + -4 = -6
-2 + 4 = 2
2 + -4 = -2

2 - 4 = 2 + -4 = -2
2 - -4 = 2 + 4 = 6

Addition

first arrange them vertically, matching the digital places; for example, if you want to add 153, 24 & 5 then arrange them as:
153
--24
--- 5
=====
(the preceding hyphens are used to format numbers!)

Now add all the unit places (3+4+5=12); write only the last digit (here 2) and keep the rest (here 1) as "carry". Now add the tenth places (5+2) and the carry over (1). Thus we get 8 without any carry over. The result is 182.

That would be a lot easier to answer if you gave a sample problem to walk through. If you get one feel free to put it up so that people can walk you through the problem(S) that you have questions about.

You can use a number line.

Or just add and subract the numbers. That's all they are! Just keep the negatives in mind as you do it.

just add or subtract normally. use your fingers, but it's better to do it mentally. if you can't, just use paper to add them.
