Goodness you have asked a tough question. One which cannot be fully addressed in a short timeframe. The American Civil War transpired due to a vast number of factors. Slavery, Greed, Political Control, Power, etc... It is not a question of who was a bad leader. There were good leaders and bad leaders on both sides of the conflict and ones opinion can easily be swayed based upon their personal feelings toward the North and the South.
If you were a Southern sympathizer you would say that Lincoln, Sherman, the Abolitionists, etc... were bad leaders.
If you were a Northern sympathizer you would say that Davis, Lee, the slave owners, etc... were bad leaders.
Only personal study in American Civil War history will allow you to answer this question for yourself.

The roots of the American Civil War are in the Constitution. The founding fathers failed to deal with the issue of slavery. They were able to deal with a lot of things, but were unable to resolve this problem. Thomas Jefferson had slaves.
The South needed slaves for its labor intensive farming, and the North became industrialized, requiring less back breaking labor. As the North became less dependent on slavery, it became more critical of the South, until the South felt the need to secede.
There weren't any particularly 'bad' leaders, just people who didn't agree on a particular issue strongly enough to cause a war.

Civil wars happen when people don't like each other. That's why they're ' civil '. It doesn't mean they're polite to one another while they're killing each other, it just means that even though they may occupy the same land space - there is either a deep schism or difference between the two. That ... is a civil war. The Romans had a really bloody one.
