You are getting a lot of mixed answers to this question. Some people are throwing out numbers that simply aren't true. If you are just sending a letter in an envelope, it is 84 cents, as is all countries outside of the U.S. (except Canada and Mexico, at 63 cents). But if you start adding ounces (making the piece of mail heavier), you're going to find a hefty increase in price. A 5-ounce item costs $4.65, and a pound is $10.20. If you are just sending letters, than 84 cents should be fine. I wouldn't worry about paying a ton extra to have it sent faster. It will take 6-16 days, and I would say it is usually around 10 or 11 days. If you're very lucky, it can be sent in just 6, but just expect around 10 or 11. That's natural for sending letters overseas, so don't worry about the time delay.
You could use e-mail by simply typing the Japanese characters in English (Roomaji). It's a lot cheaper (free) and a lot faster (instant). So if you can, I would try that. Otherwise, 84 cents is the fee you pay. I would establish the relationship through mail first, and simply ask for the person's e-mail address (give yours as well). This will help keep it going by allowing for more exchanges via e-mail. Take advantage of free technology such as e-mail, too.

If you are just sending a letter it is 80 cents unless it has gone up in the last month or so. It should still be under $1. That goes for sending a letter anywhere in the world outside of North America. My wife is Chinese so I send letters there from time to time. You should probably go to the post office to mail the letter or go to www.usps.com. It takes less then 2 weeks usually for mail to get there.

It's 94 cents an ounce. You can use any stamp you want as long as it's value is printed on it. That means you shouldn't use one of those "forever" stamps. It's best to have it weighed at the post office.
