What is the United States of America?

And please don't just say "A country with 50 states run by the president" or anything like that. Please give me what you really think that the United States of America is, and even what it was intended to be.

Like many other governmental/political entities on earth, as a nation the United States of America has often preached one thing while practicing another. It was founded on the basis of all men being created equal, yet it was simultaneously using black people as slaves, regarding Native Americans as expendable obstructions, and treating its own white female population as possessions. It has prided itself on promoting self-determination and democracy for all, while engaging in the overthrow of duly elected governments all over the world and installing and/or propping up dictatorial regimes (Chile, Guatamala, Iran, Saudi Arabia, etc.) It has preached respect for human rights while continuously neglecting and mistreating millions - the working poor, unemployed, uninsured, and homeless alike - of its less fortunate and most vulnerable citizens. It sets itself up as a paragon of peace while at the same time spending more money on implements of warfare than the rest of the world combined. It decrys the development of nuclear weapons technology throughout the world while it is the ONLY country to have ever actually USED nuclear weapons to kill people. And now, much to its ongoing discredit, it has invaded a sovereign nation on a false pretext and continues to refuse to acknowledge it acted wrongly in doing so even as it brings untold carnage and destruction to the country it was purporting to "save."

A country made up of diverse people from different backgrounds, beliefs, nationalities and races but united in what the Constitution stands for: "In order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty."

Land of the free, and the home of the brave! Beautiful, with spacious skies, and amber waves of grain; purple mountain majesty above the fruited plain...oops, got carried away! It really is a beautiful land, though, founded upon beautiful ideals. A grand experiment in government of the people, by the people, and for the people. We don't always do the right thing, but what I really like is that we actually try to. Doing the right thing matters to us.
