In a nuclear reactor the "Nuclear Fission" releases heat energy, which is used to produce steam. This steam is used to run a turbine-genertor, which will generate electricity.

Nuclear fission is a nuclear reaction in which a big nucleus like Uranium-235 is split into smaller nuclei by the bombardment of nuetron.

There are different types of nuclear power reactors operating throughout the world. It is the most environment friendly energy source known to mankind as of today. It may be noted that the lifecycle emission of green house gases from a nuclear power plant is lesser than that of a wind power plant of similiar capacity. Even the radiation emitted from nuclear power plant to the environment is less than that from a coal powered plant.

There are several different types.
The only one I'm familiar with is the Magnox type.

Uranium fuel rods are used to heat up water until it becomes super-heated steam.
This steam is then blasted through a turbine, making it turn at a high speed.
This turbine, in turn, drives the shaft on a generator or dynamo which generates electricity.

It's essentially the same as a coal, oil or gas fired power station, except the furnaces are replaced by a system to allow fuel rods to be lowered into water.

Uranium, which is normally only warm because control rods absorb neutrons. When the operator pulls the control rods out of the fuel, it heats up water which is transported to a steam generator by big pumps. The steam generator transfers the heat to clean water and makes steam. The stream is used to turn big steam turbines. The turbine is coupled to a generator which produces DC power. The DC power is converted into step AC or real ac by other components.
