national tragedies, like 9/11

You ask this question on Sept. 11, so everyone is going to say, "tragedy." (Let that be a lesson on timing of questions!)
But there are other things. Working for a common goal is one. I've seen a community come together over a project to beautify the streets by putting in flower beds.
Part of the reason President Bush lost credibility after Hurricane Katrina was not the loss of lives and property, but because the nation was pitching in with all its might, sending donations and crews of volunteers to help -- and they didn't believe the government was pulling its weight!
After the Korean War, when President Truman signed an act saying the armed services should be integrated, someone did a survey of soldiers to see how much prejudice there was. The soldiers who served in all-white units were the MOST prejudiced. Those who worked with members of other races found they had things in common, they could work together all right, and they were the least prejudiced.(1)
Another thing is appreciating each other's contributions even though we may be different. In the 1800s, when there were a lot of different immigrant groups coming to the USA, there was a lot of suspicion and dislike between different groups of people. People wouldn't employ Irish, Chinese couldn't socialize with Anglos, Poles wouldn't marry Germans, etc., etc. But gradually everyone got to know each other's customs and now we all think we're just Americans. We wash down our Chinese egg rolls with German Beer and then celebrate St. Pat's day!
Yes, a tragedy will make us pull together for a while, but I don't know that we've stayed united. Look at two things: First the bitter partisan politics that have come about since 9-11, with the anti-war people predicting (correctly) that Iraq would be a disaster and the GOP calling anyone who disagreed with them "traitors." Second, the suspicion and distrust of Muslim Americans. There was a guy on "60 Minutes" who's an airline pilot - born in the USA, but his parents were Pakistani - and he was refused a job because of that.
That's an example of tragedy breeding fear and disunity. During WWI there was discrimination against German-Americans, during WWII there was discrimination against Japanese-Americans.(2)
It takes a strong mind to resist fear. To come together we have to be both strong and open-minded.
(Hope your essay has to be longer than this -- you should do SOME more finding-out on your own!)

It seems that tragedy is what most often brings us together as a village. When my children were young we lived in a mountain community that was hit by disaster. It seems that people just came out of the woodwork to help. To offer assistance, food, shelter, what ever was needed. Neighbors I hadn't seen in years. But, you know, it wasn't short lived. It just seemed like people really stuck together for a long time after everything was back to normal. It truly made us a closer group of neighbors. I'll never forget that flood. We lost a lot of houses and material things. But not one life was lost. And we even found all the animals that had been swept away.

Obviously the tragedy of 9/11 brought us together.

Try telling your teacher that the main thing that truly brings Americans together is terror then offer that as a suggestion as to why the government allowed the special little towers to fall.

America is made up of HERO's whether in a giant way as in 9/11 or in a small way like helping the elderly lady carry her groceries..we are all HERO's. As long as America stays this way together we can and will make a difference..no matter how big or how small it might be.

Togetherness is based on your morals!!!

Unfortunately....tragedy brings people closer together....and that's when we do make a difference that counts.

Tragedy. That was the only time I've ever seen solidarity, and I am born and raised here. We are an apathetic, selfish people. After 9/11 was the only time I've seen different. I am not anti-U.S., but it is what it is.

Unfortunately, it takes something tragic like Pearl Harbor or 9/11 for that to happen. Why we can't be close and unified all the time is beyond me.

Recognizing our vunerability.

Death, sickness, war, tragedy.

Recognizing our connectedness.

Love brings us closer together. Family, birth, success, milestones (first step, first soccer game, first day of school), sharing, marriage.
