you will need to start with a clean slate by killing off all the weeds and existing grass with roundup. The benefit of sod is that you have an instant lawn, yes you will have to water more but it will look nicer faster. Hydroseed is ok but weeds will invade very quickly in the bare soil while the seeds germinate ,where sod is more likely to choke out the weeds. The roundup will help with weed prevention. Remember to NOT fertilize for the first year on your sod. Use good quality topsoil when laying sod or hydroseeding.

First of all, I am sorry, but I can not believe that Home Depot has someone working for them who claims to be a specialist and tells you not to fertilize for one year!!! Also, RoundUp does not prevent weeds from growing.
Sod or seed, it is very important that you use a good fertilizer with high middle and last numbers to feed the roots and help make a strong healthy lawn. In southern Ontario, fall is an excellent time to seed or sod a lawn, so I would look at cost and how important it is to you to have a lawn right now. But for sure, apply a good fertilizer before you do, so it is there when it is needed.

If this is an area that you will see often, then sod for sure. It's s small enough area that the cost won't be too high. Sod, water, it's done. No time to wait. No seed to die, no weeds coming in.

Grass seed, definitely. Make sure you buy a bag that says 99.9% grass seed! If it does not, that means that it has lots of unwanted weed seeds in it! Sod doesn't easily grow and the sod in our front lawn has strange growth habits.

They're both easy to root and maintain. Go for the sod for an instant green lawn, seed for an economical approach.

If you have the same grass seed that the rest of the yard has, then it would be better to plant the grass seed and let it grow. Sod doesn't always last, and can easly die if not taken care of properly.
Just my suggestion.

Sod is a quick fix but hard to maintain. If it was me I'd go with the hydroseed. All you have to do is water. Even hydroseeded grass will give you all the same grass. Best of luck to you.

Sod for sure. You will have to keep it watered for the first two weeks, but it will pay off in the long run. It will look better and fill in great!!!

How about door number 3? Runners from your existing grass. That is how we've filled bare spots in our lawn.
