If you google search "meteorites" you will find photos. Some (NOT all) metoerites have a *very* distinctive grain pattern of crystals, that only forms in zero gravity If you happen to have that, you;ve got a star rock!

note: I know the above is right, but this may NOT work in reverse. I.e. I do not think that the LACK of this grain means it is NOT a meteorite, though I know that the EXISTENCE means it IS a meteorite.

The two main types of meteorites are iron meteorites and stony meteorites. If your rock is iron, then there's a fair chance it is a meteorite (I said fair, not likely). Stony meteorites are for the most part indestinquishable from earth rocks. The only way to know for sure if you have a stony meteorite is to witness it falling from the sky.

You should have it analysed by a geophysicist who know's something about astronomy. Most Astronomers wouldn't be able to look at it and tell you whether or not it's an asteroids. Unless you found this rock in antartica or the australian outback chances are it's just a rock.

Call up a local science center - if they have an astronomer on staff they may be able to tell, if not they should know who else you can ask.

Take it to your nearest college or university. Thye are bound to have an astronomy lab, or will know what to do with it.
