I would agree with most of the above comments that plus sized women do make poor decisions when it comes to clothing sizes being too small. But in the same sense if a plus sized woman wears a "moo moo" which simply drapes over her body, then she will seem figureless and in turn look much larger than she is.
I have been heavier set for a good portion of my life, and it's hard to find trendy clothes without looking horrible in them (they just don't make plus sized clothes fashonable). But there is no reason to try to stuff yourself into a pair of pants that is to small just to look "in style"

Lany Bryant (plus sized fashion) has turned their store around in the past few years and now i love shopping in there, as they keep up with fashion as closely as they can. They came out with several new items this past month i just went crazy over.

Boot cut jeans (NOT FLARES) will help elongate and thin the leg. Even straight legged pants will help, and a darker denim if in jeans. It depends clothing wise on age i think but this is for 20-40 years old. Button up shirts that are perfectly fit that do not buckles at the chest will emphasize a large chest without clinging to any tummy a person might have. Also jackets with bullets are very in style. They should be waste length and have 3 buttons (for women with larger chests). Shoe wise, a pointed toe shoe with a long pant will help give the leg a much longer feel. Tank tops probably aren't the best bet for a plus sized woman as many are self conscious about their chests and arms and tanks provide very little coverage up top. And for skirts, anything that hits at the knee (NOT AT THE CALF) will also give a more proportional look.

But, knowing that it is hard to find clothes that wit well and are fashionable, if a plus sized woman wants both (good fit and style) then their best option is to shop at a store like Lane Bryant or any store that is customized for plus sized woman and then have something tailored to fit them perfectly. Nothing is better looking than a perfect fit, and this relates to plus sized woman as well as non plus sized women.

The biggest mistake is definately wearing clothes one or two sizes too small. That is a sign that the person is in denial of their weight and size. I am a plus size and have been for years. I could never wear anything that was too tight, aaargh, perish the thought. I would recommend tops that cover the upper arms (batwings) and cover the overhang (apron) of the lower stomach. But as for the lower half, that depends on how tall you are as to the length of skirt. If you are quite short, then a knee length skirt. Otherwise a long skirt would look fine.
As for trousers and jeans, just make sure you can sit down in them comfortably. Personally I go for a size larger to allow for any swelling of the stomach or water retention.
Dresses are a no no. As no matter what the shape they invariably do not fall right.
It really is all a matter of being comfortable with your shape and knowing what looks best for you.
We are not all clones and we all have own own individual tastes.

Tank tops with no bra. If they're really plus sized, they tend to wear the ones with supposed built in bras - but hey...honey...that elastic ain't gonna hold those things up that well. Yes, men love big boobs. But not the kind that fall to the knees because they're really fat and not real boobs. And, it doesn't matter how big the boobs are - when each bicep is bigger & flabbier than each breast - it's just plain gross!

Shirts that are too tight & short. This is because a: don't want to wear plus sized clothes and try to squeeze into shirts that say "da bomb" made for girls 30 pounds lighter. Yes, belly buttons are cute - but surrounded by stretch marks & cellulite is not cute so please cover up.

Low rise jeans that are not meant for a girl with a short butt. Hence, a fat girl instantly becomes a plumber.

Wearing jeans that are too tight. Even with stretch jeans - yes, fat can be tucked into the jeans. But, only to a certain extent. The other 20 pounds of potato chip belly fat will automatically fill out over the jeans, hence enhancing the tire.

Hey, I used to be a big fattie, but knew how to dress. I covered up things that would gross people out. It's not the fat that's gross, some women actually look good plus sized. It's the ones with the cellulite, fat rolls, and body acne that need to look in a full sized mirror before they walk out.

Wearing clothes with no shape. Many plus size women and teens feel they must cover-up their bodies with shapeless fabric bags because this is all they find in the plus size section of their local department store. However, there are so many online retailers (Lane Bryant, Zaftique, Ulla Popken, Roamans, etc) that sell clothes that are shaped and fashionable designed to flatter a fuller figure. There are so many clothing styles out there to highlight what you DO LIKE about your body.

Buying clothes that are not long enough. Many plus sized clothes are just regular clothes made bigger around. Shirts as well as pants need to be LONG ENOUGH! Pants should be long enough that nobody ever sees your socks, and big girls should buy shirts that fall between mid forearm and wrist. This elongates your body and keeps fat from hanging out of your clothes when you move. And, yes, obviously clothing that is too tight is just gross. Keep the rolls covered, please! I'm tired of seeing a size 16 girl stuffed into size 12 jeans, there is no shame in buying clothes in the right size.

Wearing big, huge clothes - ones that are too big - because they are uncomfortable with the shape of their bodies. Another big one is just buying clothes without trying them on. You have to know your body type and what looks good on you. The only way to do that is to go shopping and try EVERYTHING on. Just keep trying on stuff until you find what looks good. It helps to go to a store for fuller figures like Lane Bryant.

I also love watching "What Not to Wear" on TLC! There are a lot of great suggestions on that show.

i think the biggest mistake (not all plus size gals - just some certain ones. it is stereotypical to assume they are all one - one group - when it comes to fashion. some plus sized gurls choose great flattering clothing) but it is kinda wrong when they wear revealing clothes like belly shirts and spaghetty straps that are too small 4 them. the straps dig into their shoulders, uh

We all are different shapes and sizes. I really admire someone for being okay with what they are and dressing modestly to accent their best qualities. I mean, trying to fit in and show off what isn't necessarily your best assets isn't doing you any favors. My suggestion is that clothes that cover are best and skin tight isn't even always attractive on thinner girls. All sized people need to learn to dress more classy and tasteful.

Wearing tight clothes. If you are big you should shop at Lane Bryant, they have really cute clothes. Also, not caring enough or buying cheap clothes. Accesories make all the difference.
