I recently paid off a car I had been buying from my now ex-father-in-law. He has not contacted me about transferring the title. I have the contract he had us both sign when I agreed to pay him for the car, and all the copies of my payments. What can I do?

If you have paid it off, it is YOUR car. Don't listen to ignorant people. Go to the DMV and file for a lost title, if he is being petty and not giving you the title. They will wait 30 days and then send to you. (This is to make sure that the car doesn't get listed as stolen.) If you have reciepts and the contract, there will be no problems later.

You can take the contract, and all other documents relateing to the vehicle into the Tax Appraisers office and possibly have a new title issued. That is old Maritime Law but applies to any taxable items in US.
You ever get a tag or a tag renewed? Its tax, so whoever paid that tax and has reciept is often the Recognized Owner. Not allways, cause yes the Title Transfer is dependant on final, but in many cases there is either no way to get original title holder to agree or something affects the original title holder being present, is a lotta gray area there, that is what Lawyers are for.
So either hire an Attorney, or ask at the Tax and Title office of your County.

You may have to sue him to recover the title if he does not want to sign it over on his own.

Make sure your contract states that the car will be yours, once the payments are made.

The small claims court judge will only be able to make a decision based on the contract. Until then, the title and ownership is in the ex-father-in-law's name.

You tell him You'll give him a set amount of time (like 1 week) to transfer the title to you... then take him to court... Legally the car is yours IF YOU HAVE THE PAPERS YOU SAY YOU DO.... But on the side of the law it is his car with since he has the title.

It's still his until he signs off on the title and it's transferred into your name.
