I don't know, but he is a GOD in Germany. I just got back from there and I swear there are churches that gather to worship the almighty David Hasselhoff.

He starred in a soap opera, so middle aged women fell in love with him.
Then he was on Knight Rider with a talking car, and guys thought that was cool.
Then he starred on Baywatch, which is just awesome. It's the American dream. So the whole world tuned in (huge international syndication). A dude surrounded by Playmates, ultra cool.
He wrote a song about freedom and performed it on the Berlin wall, which endeared him to Germans. And launched a singing career in Europe. Now he's uber cool.
However, the night of his Pay-per-view concert in the US, OJ Simpson decided to go for a drive in a white Bronco, so everyone watched that instead.

Are you serious? How the hell cool would you be if you had a car that could talk and jump over tractor trailers and break through brick walls? Not to mention all that brown sugar he's showing with a few buttons down - I mean he set the standard for HIP!
Not to mention his starring role in America's Got Talent!
Top that off with a flourishing singing career, and the looks of a life-guard stud - and come on, HE'S GOT THE RIGHT STUFF!

Oh come on, that's like asking why the pope is a catholic! It was his destiny to become a god of popular music, hairy chests and naff television, and attract millions with it. Ever since he had that massive plastic surgery in the first episode of Knight Rider!

Actually it is in part due to his music. He is extremely popular in Germany. The reason he's so popular though is because he has what is called "staying power" kinda like William Shatner...he spans over decades so people remember him. Knight Rider, Baywatch, music, etc.....he's usually always in the spotlight and that's what keeps him popular.

I have always thought of him as infamous rather than famous -- in a "William Hung got "popular" from his American Idol appearance" sort of way. Are there people who really think he has talent or something?

Well back in the day and even today, the man is not bad looking at all! He's holding his age pretty well. Now he can't sing and he can't act! I guess it's that gorgeous curly hair!
