I have the ParaGard (copper, non-hormonal) IUD, and my obgyn said it's effective immediately. I don't know about the Mirena (hormonal) IUD. I know with the pill, you have to use an alternate form of birth control (e.g. condoms) for a while, to let the hormones from the pills get into your body and start working. Since Mirena is hormonal, it would make sense to me that it would hold true for this as well. I know very little about Mirena, but I'm the expert when it comes to ParaGard. :) If you have any questions, you can send me a message.

An IUD is a device inserted in your uterus that "prevents preganancy". There are several negatives to this procedure
I think you should look at all your options before jumping into this particular one.
There is a company called Planned parenthood you may want to check out their website or consult with your OB/GYN on your options. Good Luck.

An IUD can be put in at any time in your menstrual cycle if it is certain that you are not pregnant. It will be effective immediately.

My doctor said to use back-up protection for the first month just as a precaution. I had mine in for 3 years and I don't know what hurt worse - going in or coming out! I hope your experience is better than mine was. God bless!
