Yes, it can be installed onto an ordinary house. As long as you've got the land or the roof area to have enough panels, you're good.
Solar panels produce DC (direct current), and household electricity is AC (alternating current), so you need a way to convert -- this is done with devices called "inverters." The control circuitry, the inverters, and hooking up the system to your electric meter so you can feed power back to the electric company and get paid for it when you're not using all you produce are part of the package.
A typical system will cost around $15,000 for a full installation, including equipment and labor. Many states offer rebates or tax advantages that can offset that cost, and if you sell power to the grid it'll help pay for it as well. At any rate, since you're not buying any or as much power anymore, the system will usually pay for itself in 5-10 years or less.
I have solar and wind generators, and haven't bought electricity from the utility for 2 years now, in fact they pay me. And I never have a power outage. Good stuff :)

There is a good answer here that explains how it can be done. But also remember that solar energy does not necessarily mean converting sunlight to electricity. For many years in places all around the world people have used solar water heaters to capture the heat of the sun. that can save a LOT of electricity and it's really cheap to do. In some places in Africa I have seen people who just had 55 gallon drums painted black on their roofs. The water heats up and they get a hot shower without paying anything for electric. Lots of people in the USA have solar heating for their swimming pools. My brother has that in arizona and he saves a lot compared to the old gas heater he used to have.

Yes it is expensive, but solar energy itself is not the way to go. What you want to to is install solar panels and windmills, you can successfully power your own home with this setup and would cost around 50,000 dollars. In the long run it would save you money and you would be self sufficient. It is the way to go if you have the property and the money. Not to mention it is great for the environment.

yes it can be intalled into a regular house but it would cost a lot. you'd have to buy solar panels which absorb the sun's radiation and converts it into electricity. it would be hard to do, but in the long run, it would be very cost effective

just stick to the traditional methods...solar energy doesnt even really produce that much electricity. the panels are to small to make any significant dent in your bills
