why does the UK have the .co.uk and not the .com.uk?

Everyone else has the .com extension and then the .xx (.au, .it, .es) extension, why?

i've always wondered that too! there is this site i like to go on called http://www.s3o.co.uk/games/ and i don't know why they do "co" instead of "com". oh well, hope you enjoy the link.
