Just attack with it.

For higher character health any combat damage dealt = +exp to next HP level. Example dealing 4 damage to anything will gain you +4 HP exp, so as much damage as you can deal = higher hit points.

To deal more damage with the bow you need to gain range levels. The more damage you do with arrows the more xp you gain in range so you will need to pay attention to your equipment menu and only equip items that increase your range attack bonus such as leather armor and dragonhide.

To deal the most damage and gain levels the fastest you need to attack monsters with low defense like cows and spiders, or fight monsters that are weak against range such as wizards and dark wizards. If you aren't dealing damage you are just wasting arrows.
