No you only need itunes installed to update ur ipod, if you still are having problems go to apple's website and download the new software, that should fix your problem

no. whether it;s the ipod updater or itunes doesn't really matter. these two are updated so much that by the time you install the software you got with your ipod, it's probably alreadt out of date.

As long as you have itunes 4.9 or higher and a supporting ipod updater you do not need to use the install disk. If your not updated get the latest versions here Itunes 6 http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ and Ipod updater http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/
