I have a PC and a notebook, the pc is connected to a printer and a router which allows couple of pc's to be connected to the DSL, now the pc and the notebook are both connceted to the router.

What i am trying to do is making the printer available to the notebook too, i made the following:-
Properties--->Sharing--->then choosing a share name.

I did the above for both the pc and notebook, do i have to create the same name in "Share Name" for them both? or is it okay if they carry different names? What is the right thing to do?

ok forget that for a moment. you should be able to find the printer on your laptop. go to printers and faxes under settings. click add printer. then there should be an option to search for a printer on the network. as long as your printer is connected to your computer, it should find it.

You only need to share the printer on the computer connected to the printer, not both.

On the second computer, add a new printer and connect to the network one. Use your first computer's name and the share's name. Example:
\\COMPUTER_NAME\PRINTER_SHARE_NAME

If you're using Windows XP (or any other firewall), you'll need to open a port on the first PC to make your printer available. Under your Control Panel->Windows Firewall->Exceptions tab, activate File and Printer Sharing.

Note: depending on your OS, you might have security issues also. For example, you may have problems if you connect Windows XP and Windows 98 together. The solution would be to buy a network printer sharing device (ex: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=772809&CatId=206)
