My sod is well established and healthy for the most part. I plan on aerating this weekend, should I put seen down afterwards or is that not necessary with sod?

Obviously I meant "seed", not seen...

I guess the biggest question is whether I need to seed at all. I've got conflicting answers from other sources about whether it's necessary.

If the lawn is in good shape don't overseed. You really have nothing to gain (if it is in good shape). Sometimes putting down too much seed or reseeding when it is not necessary is a bad thing. You can end up with so many individual grass plants growing they weaken each other because they are all competing for the same water and nutrients.

If you wont get in trouble with a neighborhood association or city codes let your grass grow tall enough to go to seed next spring. when you cut it youll spread the same grass seed around use a mulching mower.

It really depends on where you live. If you get alot of snow, the snow would cause the seeds to rot in the spring. But if you don't, you should be fine unless you comparably have strong autumn rains. Waiting to spring wouldn't hurt either way.
