I played "Apples to Apples" for this first time this weekend and it was hilarious! It was clean and it took about 30 seconds to learn!

(Technically this isn't a board game, but it is a fun game for a group.)

Many people here have gone with the standards, like monopoly etc. I would say the best of that group would be pictionary (you pretty much need an even # of people for that, unless you want to leave one person out to "referee".

A couple of people have mentioned geman style boardgames. I'm a guy who plays these games myself, but it may be hard to convince people (especially six who don't normally play these games.)

My suggestion is to look at party games. It's easier to get someone to play a "party game" than a german style boardgame. I have found some lists on boardgame geek of some games (called "geeklists") you may want to try. Some that I didn't see on lists are WIts and Wagers and Attribut. Wits and Wagers was mentioned before, and it's ok: it's a game in trivia format with betting. If you know how to bet well in the game, the trivia part becomes less important. There is also Attribut, which is a word association game.

Some of these games have popular counterparts; you may want to just try the popular games, such as Balderdash or Taboo.

Oh, and I can't forget SceneIt. Very popular to watch TV and play a game after dinner. The problem with SceneIt is once someone has scene a particular tape, that tape pretty much can't be used again.

Hi scrabble or monopoly in quite a good one, what about trivial pursuit, or something along those lines, you could even swap and change to make the night more fun. If you are having a party and your guest know you are playing board games then why dont you ask for there suggestions. Maybe each person can bring a different came each. Hope you have a good night, dont forget the After Eight Mints, we use to have these when we were playing board games after dinner.

Well, i have no idea what sort of friends you have, but if they are anything like mine, here's some suggestions that may work out.

Apples to Apples: not really a board game, but a total blast. A game of absurd word matches.

Settlers of Catan: you'll need the 5-6 player expansion though. An extremely simple strategy game of colonization.

Ticket to Ride or Ticket to Ride: Europe Compete to make the best train routes.

Puerto Rico: A more complex game good for those who like abstract strategy and economics.

Powergrid: Less complex than Puerto Rico, harder than Catan. Build the best power network.

Tigris and Euprates: Considered by many the finest modern strategy game. Only four can play.

Boggle: Race to find words on jumbled grid. Much fun.

Acquire: Create companies, buy stock and merge them. A classic.

There are today many excellent games for 4 people that are very nice and that take a bit more than one hour to play. They are known as "German board games" and they have the characteristics that you don't fight against the other players which makes them pleasant to play with Friends

The most popular of the "new" games is the "Settlers of Catan" it is a very fun game where you build, produce and trade your production with other players.

Note: there is an extension to settles of Catan to play it with up to 6 players

Another simple to learn and very fun game is "ticket to ride" where you buy rail tracks on a large USA map to link the cities of your secret objective

Note before you buy a game you should try it. If you don't find people who already own the gamet you can often play it on line on sites like
http://www.brettspielwelt.de
or on the game's editor site

most of the above answers are not too good with more than 4 participants. Try a game called Mexican Train, a form of dominos. Can be played with up to 8.

Catch Phrase! 4 or more adults in teams . It's a hoot. We usually play this with family after a big gathering and meal. Monopoly is also great fun. especially if you are competitive. or at least my family thinks so.Scrabble,Tri-ominos
