Windows Security updates are much like a service pack for your operating system, they fix problems and security risks that someone could utilize to potentially take control of your computer. Some times when Microsoft realeases new Security updates they replace previous updates. However, you should not uninstall any of the updates that show up in Add/Remove programs as it would put the files back on your machine that had security holes in the first place. If you are using Windows XP there is a check box at the top of the Add/Remove Programs window that will not show updates.

The updates are based upon the version of the Windows CD that you have. If it is an older version, it probably doesn't include SP2 (service pack 2) which is a definite plus and only makes XP a better product, as with the other updates.
If you get rid of any of the updates, the improvement to the XP software or the security protection it provides goes away with the removal/uninstall.
There is no real good reason to remove them.
If you were to purchase the absolute latest produced version of XP many of the updates would be built into the software already and you wouldn't have the option of removing them.
My recommendation is to simply leave those you have alone and continue to acquire the new updates as they become available.

You keep them for the life of your pc. Microsoft has a long history of updating critical patches to fix a prior patch that was released with holes in for an attacker to obtain control over your pc.
If you start removing these updates you are going to find your pc open to attacks.
They cause no harm and better safe then take the risk to remove.
I have more critical update patches then actual program. They go back for years.

They don't hurt anything by being there. "Removing" these updates can potentially roll back the update leaving a vulnerability. Luckily, they are in alphabetical order, and "Windows..." is towards the bottom ;)
