I'm Irish, and always hear in films about getting to second base and so on! What exactly are they?

They are where they keep all the heavy artilery..
when things start to heat up they go to another base closer to where the action is more intense..usually there are 3 and then the next is the homebase cause the mission has been accomplished.

I'm not American, but am acquainted with the terminology.
The bases refer to there Sport "Baseball". Where after hitting a ball you have to run round a diamond shape. Each corner is known as a base. The reference is linked to how the points is scored. The base are where you run to and if you are not touched by a person with the ball or it's not caught, you are safe.
There are 4 bases in the diamond. The last called "Home"
The Sexual connotation refers to each base as how close you get to full intercourse. 1st Base - Kissing. 2nd Base - Fondling, 3rd Base - Sexual foreplay. Then there's "The Home Run" - Where the full point is scored, full sexual intercourse. Have fun, no matter what base you get too.
