Do not try to get an apartment this way! Go to a Realtor that sells apartments in NYC. It will cost you a bit more, but you will have less chance of ending up in a really bad/dangerous situation.
Like Century 21 which is reputable. http://www.c21wbmay.com/

Or if you have friends here ask what Realtor they have used. It will be hard if you are not in NYC right now and if you are shy people might try to take advantage of you.

NYC is one of the most expensive places in the US right now. The cheapest place you might be able to find ( and this is with a LOT of looking) is about $800 us and that is in the Bronx maybe Queens or Brooklyn.

Good luck finding anything under 1,000 in Manhattan, it can be done, but it is very rare.

Whatever you do, get as much information as you can and be careful, if something doesn't seem right or if the offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Guten Aben!

There is no inexpensive housing in NYC. This is a big country with many good places to live that has reasonable housing. Do some research on the Internet for places that interest you. If the schools for the area are not up to your standards and you live in a more reasonable area you will be able to afford a private school for your son where he will be able to get a good education. Best wishes.

Go to your local newspaper as soon as you can, and look for a apartment in a reasonable price, then do a search for schools in that area and find the best for you and your son.

sadly in NYC there is no such thing as fair priced. best you can do is move to the smaller suburbs and hope you can find an old person renting out a room.
