Most definitely. I prefer to calculate things in my head or even go for a pencil and some scratch paper before hitting the keys.

By manual ( rather than 'mental') calculation you may mean a
system i have seen many children and teenagers of
the indian subcontinent
use. They don't merely "count on their fingers " up to ten. They can count on their fingers using each section of each finger. It looks very complicated and they can do all sorts of calclations this way. It looks a little as though they are using their fingers like an abacus. They go very fast.
An abacus is also a form of manual calculation and i understand that there are a lot of Chinese still using the abacus.

Yes and Yes. I do a lot of calculations by hand, but it's very easy to use a calculator or the computer. I've found that many people are totally dependent upon machines for simple arithmetic.

um.. no!
i mean i do calculations manually and i got a real cool scientific calculator that has everything except graphs and i dont really bother going for a calculator for doing every other calculation...
infact the manual strategy helps in pumping up ur basic math and arithmetic skills..!

Not everybody uses caculators...and I can still add up in my head...bigger figures that I've shown..just messing then, but to be honest most people use calc etc. because they are quicker... well thats what I'd like to think,,,could be wrong.

Yup, but being able to save time doing one task just leads to more stuff computers still can't do that needs to be done by hand, so we're not completely inept... Yet

My favorite thing to do is to go into the gas station, buy something, then say, "and the rest on pump 3." Poor idiots-it throws them everytime!!!
