Tradition !!!!! They date back to Naval uniforms worn prior to the War of 1812. Designed for warmth without excessive bulk (That's why they are made of melton wool) . I still have mine from 1968, and it's still as functional as ever.

I believe it's their unofficial "navy" uniform. sailors back in the day wore these types of coats on their voyages out into sea so it may be part tradition as well.

They are very warm because they are heavy, they make real good wind breakers, and because of the heavy and tight wool weave they tend to shed water.
