Gabriel was, by far, a much better vocalist for the type of "progressive" music Genesis was creating, at the time. His voice had much more character and warmth than Phil's - which, was essential to the story-type songs they used to write. Gabriel-era songs just don't sound the same with Phil's vocals. Collins' voice is far too thin and "poppy" for my taste.
Collins was - first and foremost - a drummer. And a damn good one, too!
As for Gabriel leaving the band.....
The other members of Genesis felt that Pete's extravagant costumes and over-the-top stage persona were garnering too much attention and overshadowing the music. Pete was portrayed in the media as "The Star" and the rest of the band were nothing more than backing musicians to his genius. This, and the fact that Pete wanted to move his music in other directions, led to an irreparable rift, which led to Pete's inevitable departure from the band following "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" tour in 1975.
Genesis was a great band. But once Steve Hackett left after "Wind And Wuthering", they took a more commercial and pop-laden direction, at which time I lost all interest in the band.

phil was the drummer of the bandwhile peter was still with genesis...peter wanted to try his hand in the solo world and put genesis on the back burner which led to mike rutherford basically starting a coup against gabriel...they were going to look for a new singer when collins steeped in at the recording studio as a vocalist and that was the end of gabriel once tony banks and rutherford realized they had a lot of talent behind the drumkit...my opinion it was a good change as I prefer collins' vocals to gabriels's genesis...i prefer gabriel's solo stuff to phil collins solo stuff though...did you know that collins played drums on robert plant's principle of moments album?

Peter had the better voice, but left when recording technology was all poopy. When you listen to Peter's modern stuff (UP-one of the best albums ever) you can here the range, emotion, and power of his vocals.
No ding to Phil, however, who is a pretty good vocalist himself.
Oh, and Peter left Genesis to pursue his own musical direction. He wanted more control over the music than was available with the other highly creative members of the band.

phil collins is a much better fit for genesis,, he played drums both when gabriel was in and also after he took the lead,,, also they got rid of gabriel because they thought he wasnt heading them in the right direction and the scope of the music scene was changing,, peter also was looking to embark on a solo career,, so it was mutal and all are still friends,, they felt collins background and recognizability would help them market better in the U S which in the 80s was key for most bands,, thus the 2nd coming of the British Invasion thanks to Mtv,,

Gabriel had the better voice, but not the better voice for Genesis songs Collins had that (to anyone who knows music that will make sense)
Collins was, and still is, a drummer.
One of the best around, except for Chester who drums for him now.

Of course it was Phil Collins! He is only one of best singers of all time AND he is absolutely brilliant! And I believe he played the drums.

Phil is the drummer. And to be honest he was (and still is great). I miss the days when he and Chester were side by side. Peter wanted to go solo, but when he was their "front" the group had some great percussion (Dance on a volcano?)
