I had just arrived in NYC for Columbia's visiting student program. My roommate, a NYC native, took me out for coffee and we were headed back to campus for class when the first plane hit. I spent the rest of the day with her, trying to track down all her family to make sure everyone was ok. I have never felt more helpless. The scope of the tragedy completely dwarfed your ability to cope and feel useful. I remember walking around the city for weeks after on an emotional rollercoaster. I'd be just fine, and then I'd pass a "have you seen my loved one" flier and burst into tears. I think I cried for about three weeks.

I don't know how anyone managed to sit through all the 9/11 movies that have come out recently. KROQ played a series of audio clips from 9/11 and immediately after today and I cried all the way to work. It's a shame how politicized the memory of that day has become. Everytime I hear a politician mention it as justification for this or that overseas action I want to scream. There are millions of people for whom the mention of 9/11 reopens emotional scars and for our leaders to use invoke that memory so casually is heartless.

I was there the week before on vacation, but luckily was out of there before it happened. That would have been horrible.
