There is proof that dogs DO understand language. :)
-----------------
As many a dog owner will attest, our furry friends are listening. Now, for the doubters, there is scientific proof they understand much of what they hear.
Science magazine reports that German researchers have found a border collie named Rico who understands more than 200 words and can learn new ones as quickly as many children.
The researchers found that Rico knows the names of dozens of play toys and can find the one called for by his owner. That is a vocabulary size about the same as apes, dolphins and parrots trained to understand words, the researchers say.

If you talk to your dog like you do a person they will learn to understand you. They have feelings just like we do. My lab snapped at my Son one day, and then came in the other room where I was. I scolded him and told him to go tell Jimmy he was sorry. He got up, went to my son's room, sat down next to him and hung his head. If that wasn't saying I'm sorry, I don't know what was!! Animals are so much like us! Most people don't realize just how much! Be kind to your dog, spend lots of time with him and talk to him like your friend. He will love you unconditionally and be loyal friend for the rest of it's life. You get better love from your dog than most people!

Yes, dogs understand, by body language, tone, hand gestures and much more. It is something learned by repetative hearing & seeing but yes they do understand. My dog used to comfort me when I was feeling ill. My cat would rub on me when I would cry. Animals are great.

I know my dog understood what we were saying. He knew when we said outside, my granddaughter's name & could distinguish between hers and the other kids' names, knew when he heard me chopping that he might get some scraps as oppossed to other cooking. Now he can't hear or see so he doesn't come at all unless you are right in front of him with his leash.

i read that dogs can understand up to 100 commands. they understand cause and effect. like if you sound angry they will go hide.
i think they do understand some things over time. like when i ask my dog if she wants to go for a walk she gets all happy and brings me the leash. or if i say sit they sit. ect.

No I think we probably just look like a bunch of rambling retards to them. Dogs sense emotions and that is how they react. They know sounds. I think they learn their names bc it is repeated so much that they pick up on the sound of it.

Just like cats, I believe they can understand or make sense of tone of voice.

My wife's dog did not understand that I was in charge. I told him to sit and he snarled at me. I told him to stay and he snarled at me. I put on his leash and he snarled and bit me. I tried to put food in his dish and he bit me. I then shoved a broom handle down his throat until his mouth bled and he gagged. He no longer snarls and bites me.
