So I asked a question last week about my friend who has been contacting me way to much. I have since then told this person to chill a little and have been ignoring him. However I am new to the group of friends and have 2 people I really trust (one is a friend of my brothers and the other is just a sweet stand up person who is my brothers friend's best friend) anyways the to much contact person has started spreading nasty rumors about me and at my age it seems childish (mid 20's) and very lame, it has made the last few days difficult with my new friends calling me saying "OMG why is he saying these things" as they all know it isn't true but the point is it is still a little hurtful. So I guess my question is how shoudl I go about severing the friendship and not suffering the scary backlash /stalkerish behaviour?

I would recommend taking a bigger guy with you to confront this person to say "enough is enough" I don't want to hear from you again. You make me uncomfortable and if you have to say you'll call the cops on them because it would be harassment, then say that too.
Some people just don't get it until you say the words right to their face. And if you say it in a passive way, then they will think there is still hope for a relationship.
I had to tell a guy that I wouldn't mind doing "group" things with him, but that was all. I had a friend nearby in case things went badly. He was upset and stomped off, but after a few weeks had passed, he had gotten over it. I'm glad I said something, otherwise he'd still be following me around.

at your age, I would think you could take this person to court and get a order for him to leave you alone and I would talk to the judge or attorney about him stalking and how he is scaring your character, defecation of character I believe it's called . But one thing for sure I would stop the stalking.

Get a restraining order against the stalker and also slap him with a slander suit.

A good friend would consider the source of the remark. If they are good friends, they should judge you by YOUR actions, not what someone else says.
