Warm or cold, milk can help you fall asleep. Other choices:

chamomile tea (very soothing and relaxing)
Valerian root (in capsule form)
melatonin pills

A couple of tablets of calcium also work well. If you don't like the taste of warm milk, add a drop or two (not much) of vanilla and a tiny dash of cinnamon or cardamom. Keep the flavors very light. Sweeten with just a little honey if needs be.

Kava kava root is an excellent sleep aid, too, and is often available in tablet form. It helps keep you asleep, or at least it does for me.

It depends.

It's not Gross like some people mentioned above. Doctors do recommend a glass of warm milk an hour b4 going to bed. Apparently it really helps if you have trouble sleeping.

Keep in mind that it doesn't work for everyone.

If you're having trouble sleeping on an occasional basis then you can try a non-habit forming sleep aid like Unisom, It's so gentle that pregnant women can take it. If your sleeplessness has lasted for over a month then you may need something more than a glass of anything. You may be suffering from insomnia which can be quite dangerous if not treated. Talk to your doctor and decide what's best for you.

Dairy, in general, is supposed to make you relaxed before bed. If you are not that partial to drinking milk in the evening, having some yogurt or cheese would most likely have the same effect, although be warned that your stomach may react in some very gassy ways. To sleep at night, stay away from tea or anything with caffeine or sugar in it (this includes desserts and even fruit.) I am always told to have protein before bed, although the thought is not very appetizing.

It does if you're taking 50mg of Benedryl (diphenhydramine) with it!

Diphenhydramine is now offered as a non-addictive sleep aid. The sleep aid dose is equivelent to taking two 25mg Benedryl tablets.
