Recently purchased a 2005 Mini Cooper for resale and I want to remove the huge British flag off of the roof. I got it off of ebay motors and dont know how they are affixed (have'nt picked it up yet.) Is anyone familiar with these things? Are they vinyl overlays, or should I go ahead and get an appointment at the paint shop?

The flags are decals, I think there is a chance that it could be painted on, but a slim one. It will still be a pain in the neck to remove, being that it will leave behind alot of adhesive residue.

As for the "remove it or not remove it" debate people have somehow made this, I know where you are coming from, I have been a car dealer in rural Alabama for 30 years, it is certainly in your best intrest to remove the union jack. People just dont realize how crazy rabid patriotic these people are down here, I'm originally from New York so it came as a total shock to me. I would'nt even be suprised if some hill jack vandalizes the car. Heck, the car is actually German anyway...

As a Mini owner, and a southerner, I think you really should leave the flag on the roof. I realize you have experience selling, but selling American and Japanese cars is quite different from selling Minis. You have a niche market here, one in which the Mini culture is more important than gas mileage. The flag is part of the culture.

You see, Mini owners buy their cars because they are so different. I'm a 38 year old woman with rally stripes on my bonnet (aka hood, for non-Mini folks) -- not exactly what you would expect out here in cow country or for a woman of my age and professional status. That said, you are looking for a niche customer. The typical 2nd hand Mini owner is going to be kid in HS or college whose folks are indulging him ... he will adore the flag. Take it from one who knows -- the more outrageous, the better. Being a Mini owner means you look for these things. How else do you think the company came up with such outrageous ideas for its cars? There IS a market for this kind of kitsch.

I thought it was a decal, like pinstriping is.
did you try heating a small corner of it with a heat gun (SET ON LOW, the lowest of the low--in fact, just use a hair dryer!)
why do you want to remove it? I think the union jack is awesome!
prob has better resale value with it on.

You know I always thought the union jack was painted on. You will love the flag once you get to know it. Then Become "Nigel Shiftright" in his string back gloves, Beret and driving glasses. Tally Ho!

My nephew has one with the Union Jack on the roof. His is painted on. Not sure if that's the way they all are. I was surprised how popular that option was on this side of the pond!

I think it is a decal. Any good body shop can remove in a few hours. I think you are making a mistake taking it off (unless you live in Arkansas).
