I'm writing a profile on a classmate and I'm wondering what kind of questions will get the interviewee to open up? The 5 w's are great but a little old. What types of things would you ask about?

Often the most innocuous questions can lead to big revelations. I have experienced it more than once in my career. Concentrate on getting your interviewee to talk at length, on any subject. Be observant. Areas of interest will present themselves. If the interview slows down, change course. Just keep him/her at ease and talking. Keep it conversational rather than formal. Information will flow more freely that way.
It also helps to do some research before the interview. Better background information yields better questions.

Interest, where visited, family roots etc. This helps a bit with being comfortable with the person asking.

What does he/she like to do in their spare time, such as hobbies or sports, how involved are they in this activity. What do they plan to study in college and what kind of vocation do they plan, and why did they make that choice. You might ask who their favorite teacher and subject is, and why.
