THE SINGING COP: No shortage of gigs five years later
NEW YORK -- Daniel Rodriguez was vacationing in the Bahamas, his publicist explained. Upon his return, he had performances scheduled in New York and Las Vegas, among his dozens of annual appearances.

On Sept. 11, 2001, Rodriguez was one of New York City's 40,000 police officers. One day later, his life changed irrevocably. By the end of the year, he had become New York City's "singing cop" - performing at more than 100 funerals.

"It put me on another career path," he said. "It opened another door."

Two years ago, he retired from the NYPD. Rodriguez, 42, now lives in Land O'Lakes, Fla. He's recorded three albums. He has become a fixture at major events such as the U.S. Open. He sang at the Republican National Convention, the World Series, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Christmas tree lighting at Rockefeller Center

A recent article referred to him as "America's tenor." And he recorded with one of the "Three Tenors," international superstar Placido Domingo.

Rodriguez's is one of the few happy tales that emerged from that September morning. He worked at ground zero, looking for survivors. Instead, two members of his precinct wound up dead.

"My career has deeper meaning," he said. "For most people 9/11 comes once a year. I do memorial services almost every day."

He's doing opera and singing on broadway - which is where he was before 9/11 as well. He has an excellent voice that stirs the soul!

He actually continued singing in different venues, even at Carnegie Hall with Pavarotti, but he has not been lucky to get a record deal.
