It may have something to do with the fact that men have been in power for centuries and until recent times women were look at as property. The 20th century has produced several female artist of note. Grandma Moses for one. Women were taught the arts as young girls in earlier centuries but the best they could hope for was to become a wife and mother. This is a sad fact of history.

I suppose that if you were to ask most people to name the top 10 artists in the world you would be lucky if there was a woman in there.
I feel that this may be true because when you think of the great masters of our time it was a male orientated profession.
Today I expect there are as many women artists as there are men.
The other strange thing about artists generally is that they often only come to world fame once they are dead.
Sad that.

Each Country has a few. I don't know why women's painting is not recognized as much as men's. But it is not coreect tosay that tere are NO women painters. Yoko Ono is famous for her work. Although, she is more of a performance artist. Frida Kalo is a very famous Mexican artist, and Norway has put two ofits famous women artists on postage stamps. America has a couple of famous women artists- One named Georgia O'Keefe and the other Beatrice Wood. She lived in Ojai, California and lived to be over 100 years old.

I know you're going to berate me for this but I'm at the end of a long day and need to cheer myself up........... (there is a serious answer after the "humorous" one) ........... They're too busy painting their nails to apply any on the canvas (sic.).
On a more serious front though, it probably has something to do with perspective. I read an article which showed men score a lot higher than women on tests involving shapes. Therefore, if someone wants to create something on canvas or by sculpting, regardless of their creative ability, a lack of understanding of perspective can be a problem.
Before I get a flurry of replies from feminists, let me say this is not a rule set in stone (excuse the artistic pun). My sister lectures in art and is quite successful in selling work while I am incapable of any artistic output. I formed this idea a long time ago based on someone Else's research not any male v's female thinking.

Like VickiN I've heard of that T.Emin too. But we're talking about artists here aren't we. There are scores of famous - in varying degrees - women artists: painters, musicians, ballerinas, soccer strikers, designers, poets/novelists. Re-phrase your Q, and be specific - it helps Answerers no end!

There are a LOT of famous women artists. I took a class called 'Women in Art History'. Not as much as men, mind you but they are there! Look up Frida Kahlo, Linda McCartney, Elizabeth Keith, there were women who created wonderful tapestries in the middle ages, quiltmakers in the 19th century, Georgia O'Keefe, etc... etc...
google and you shall find!

What type of artist? Painters, there are too many to name. You are on the internet. Look it up. Singers, of course. Designers, more then you could imagine.
Frida Kalo, Beverly Sills, Edith Head.
A better question is this: Why would you ask such a thing?
