All boards have bases that are porous, which means they have tiny holes. A hot wax is applied to the base to help with glide on the snow. To be really technical, you need to measure the temperature of the wax because there are different types to use (warm wax, cold wax, or very specific temp. wax). Most shops use a universal wax.

The waxing gives you optimal glide on the snow. Have you ever noticed on the base of a board the white streaks after you use it several times or it sits over the summer? This means your board is dried out and needs wax.

Some boards need waxing more often, but these are usually high end or racing boards.

Snow wax is very important for competitive snowboarders to get faster. For normal user it is usually not so important. It becomes important when it’s getting warmer. It prevents the snow sticking on your board.
