I do make assumptions, however I try and keep an open mind...sometimes it takes several encounters to see past someones "first impression"...one reason I work really hard at this is so many people comment that I am different than they thought I would be...not related to clothes or looks...I am very direct and typically don't hold back....in my old age I have learned that comes across as a bit**....it proves an old dog can learn new tricks...

That depends on how you mean the question-everyone forms opinions about other folks by how they appear, and this is not
necessarily wrong or detrimental. In fact, it can be a lifesaver in a street situation. Not only appearence, but body language can say loads about a person, too.
The old saying is that the outward is a reflection of the inward, and I have found it to be true throughout my life.
I saw a video of a Fox reporter getting assaulted over the weekend, and though to myself, "he should have seen that coming, and prepared to defend himself." The thug walked right up to him (from quite a distance away) and POW! landed a blow right to the guy's head.
His posture and walk should have caused warning beepers to go off in the victim's head, but apparently they did not function, or he chose to ignore them if they did. He was fairly seriously injured, and didn't fight back until it was (nearly) too late.

well, i do, and i cant deny it. every time i see someone i judge them by the way they look. i am not proud of it but i know that everyone does judge a book by their cover. even if i do i don't let it hold me back to get to know the person. most of the times i am wrong and i learn somthing every time. for example in university, on first day i looked around the lecture room and i saw this girl giving me the meanest looks, like she wanted to murder me. At that point i felt very distressed and i was trying to think of anything that i may have done to pee her off. i thought she was gonna be one of those very rude, horrible and cruel bullies but few week later i got to know her thought a girl we both knew and she is really nice we are close mates now and we talk all the time. Talk about ironic ... this girl that i was wiry of is the girl i'd be great friends with. So my advice it to never let your first opinions about a person hold you back before getting to know the person. Make assumptions but don't let it cloud your judgement.;p with all my best wishes

I used to do that all the time and got egg on my face so much I decided to stop doing it and give people the benefit of the doubt, so I slackened the knicker elastic and chilled out fortunately the gut instinct kicked back in and I went back to doing it and glad I did because I saw someone for just exactly what she was 2 years ago and boy am I glad I judged her first, so as much as it doesn't always pay to do that, occasionally it does.

Absolutely! Whether we're talking about actual books or metaphorically, we are taken in by/manipulated by packaging and the visual appeal of things and people. As I get older, though, I realize the importance of taking time to find out what's inside. It's the most reliable information.

because we kind of fear what we don't know, so we try to define something before we understand it.

You see a black guy dressed all hip-hop and you make a judgment because that will makes you comfortable in your understanding. The reality could be that he is a well educated, hard working, and a upstanding young many who simply choses to dress a certain non-conforming, gangsta way.

The same goes for a black guy that's well dressed with glasses. You judge him to smart and with character when in really he could be an idiot hooked on crack

Everyone is. It is a natural human process. The brain sees, labels and puts away social information instantly. I'll include a link to the psychology of stereotyping later.

Literally, I will never pick a book with a boring cover. I will never buy sweets with boring wrappers or use dull paper ro wrap presents. Why should it not be the same with looks....
