Is there a separate plug for the mic part of your headset by any chance? Did it come with a driver? Since it's not being recognized, I have a feeling you're missing another cord (that would go into the mic jack) or a driver...... hmmmmm

Please check the volume control of the microphone if it is minimized to zero or muted off. Only cordless and USB headsets require separate drivers to identify others plug straight into the PC's sound card ports and need no additional software installation.

You should have two jacks with the head phone, one for the sound, another for the mic. You have already plugged in the stereo jack. You just need to plug the second jack into the mic port. It should be next to the stereo port in the back of your PC. If you plug in the front ports, you need to be careful because they may not be all wired up.

check your sound control you might have a icon on the bottom right that has a speaker double click on that and make sure you do not have it set automatically off.

if you dont have that go into control panel and open up sounds and check your settings there.

if not i would say the headphone is not working properly.

good luck hope everything works out for you.

Reinstall the drivers for the headset and make sure it's compatible with your OS.

speakers don't need drivers, its a problem with the headset, try connecting it to any steroe system, if it didn't work, then return it to where you purchased it and ask for replace!
