Ive seen quite a few answers of the uneducated that when semen hits the air its not active anymore. Haven't any of you heard of sperm banks? Where do you think the men ejaculate? Yup in a cup where the semen hits the air and amazingly it lives. Why do people think that when semen hits air it dies?

Note that in sperm banks, they immediately freeze the semen. Semen does not have a long "shelf life" in area, or outside of a warm, moist area, unless it is frozen.

So you are right, people who think semen dies upon hitting the air are wrong. I think they may be confused with HIV, which dies only a few seconds after being exposed to air. That's why you can't get AIDS from a toilet seat or surfaces - the virus needs a direct liquid-ish contact.

Semen dies after about 5 minutes after being in contact with air. That was just discussed on "Talk Sex w/ Sue Johanson". The same question was asked. If it were a wet enviroment, just enough moisture could help them along in keeping alive.

The truth is that semen does die when it comes in contact with oxygen. However, it all depends on the circumstances and the amount of time spend in oxygen before dying. It may not necessarily die immediately but it will die.

I have read that sperm can live outside the body for an hour or so, depending on room temp, etc.
