A student has a car that gets, on average, 25.0 mi/gal of gasoline. she plans to spend a year in Europe and take the car with her. (a) what should she expect the car's average gas mileage to be in kilometers per liter? (b) During the year there she drove 6000 km. Assuming that gas costs $5.00/gal in Europe, how much did she spend on fuel? (compute to the nears dollar.)

Break this up and solve it in stages:

1st convert miles to kilometers (roughly 1 km = 1.6 times miles, but look up the exact number, so 25 miles times 1.6 is about 40 kilometers). This gives you kilometers per gallon.

2nd convert gallons to liters (roughly gallons = 4 liters, but again look up the exact value).

You now have some number of kilometers per some number of liters -- do the division (something like 40 km per gallon divided by 4 liters per gallon) and the units cancel out, leaving you with kilometers per liter. Roughly 10 km per liter is the result, your answer will differ a bit if you use more precise values to do the conversion.

For part (b), you need to do more of the same.

Divide the $5 per gallon by the number of liters per gallon, to get dollars per liter -- something like $1.25 per liter.

Divide the 6000 km by the km per gallon calculated in part (a) to get total liters used.

Multiply the total liters used by the cost per liter, and you will have the total cost of gasoline used.

For extra credit maybe consider the cost of transporting her car to europe versus the cost of renting or buying a european car that gets twice the mileage? I bet the teacher would love that!

a.) 25 mi = 40.2336 km
1 US gal = 3.7854118 L
thus:
25 mi/gal = 10.629 km/L

b.) If she drove 6000 km, then that would equal 3728.22715 mi.
3728.22715 mi / 25 mi/gal = 149.129 gal
149.129 gal * $5/gal = $745.65 on fuel.
