My husband and I just purchased our first home, and it needs some work, mostly small, but a couple of big things too... We need to replace the roof, as most of the trusses were built with 2x2's and could use to be beefed up. We're also looking into the possibility of re-pouring the basement floor, which is concrete, but would give us the opportunity to replace some aging plumbing, etc. In addition, we need to replace most of the drywall in the home, as there's no insulation in any of the exterior walls. Where should we begin, and what are we looking at spending on each of these projects? It's a single story 1200 square foot house with a simple gabled roof... nothing fancy.

I agree the roof is important
but if your roof does have trusses, and not rafters,
(do you know the difference ?)
their manufactured with 2 x 3's and are engineered for maximum strength. so maybe you'll only have to shingle
second, any windows to replace.
then do any Heating/Air repairs, (if needed)
then plumbing, followed by electrical
then install all insulation and vapour barrier
lastly drywall and paint
as far as pricing goes, it all depends on where you live

I would first make sure that the integrety of the structure is solid. That means starting with the roof. Since it sounds like you may end up ripping it off, it would be a good time to think ahead about adding a floor or expanding.

The second thing to attack is the electrical and plumbing. Everything else is just window dressing.

It really depends on where you live as to the costs because labor is of course different in different areas. However, I have been in the construction industry for 7 years and I suggest that you have people who are licensed and insured bid on the projects. Be sure to get the estimates on paper and get at least 3 estimates on each project. Remember if it seems to good to be true it probably is not true.

My husband and I just recently started this same type of project, we got the roof done because we didn't want our hardwork on the inside to be ruined by rain, it cost us about $2500 for a 900 sq ft. house, then we tore down all the sheet rock in one room and replaced and added a ceiling fan, paint, pulled up carpet and refinished the hardwood floors underneath and we averaged about $1000 a room, doing all of it ourselves of course.
We hired out hte roof repair, but did the rest ourselves.
