I'm currently a consultant and I do see a cultish side to the business. However, if you are smart about it, it can be a fun way to earn some money. I tend to avoid meetings because I don't really believe a lot of what the directors tell me. I'm a little to down to earth for that. So really, it is what you make of it.

As for "you have to wear a dress code", that is actually an incorrect statement. It is your own busines and therefore you don't HAVE to do anything you don't want to. It is strongly recomended, but there is no written rule to say you have to wear any specific things. I don't adhere to anyone's dress code but my own. When "they" start paying me to run MY Mary Kay business, then maybe I'll listen to "them."

1st of all--Mary Kay is NOT an MLM. Every consultant orders directly from the company and not from the person above them. Also all commissions are paid by the company and not by the person above you. Each consultant is an independent contractor for MK. Yes, you get "recruited" in but you don't have to do anything except order $200 once a year to remain a consultant and that is at the 50% discount so you are really getting $400 in product. As for the "pushy" consultants and directors--yes there are some out there (probably more than there should be) but some of these women are very enthusiastic about what they do and sometimes they don't understand why everyone doesn't want to do this. My own director always says "Work as much as you want to. Sell a little, sell alot. It's up to you. If you want to more, fine and I will help you" I love that woman!!!
I've been in MK for 4 years and have been able to work my business both ways, a little and a lot and have never gotten any grief about it either way.

Hi! I was a Mary Kay consultant on and off for about 2 years.

Pros: discount of 50%, being around positive women/role models, if you try really hard and devote your every waking moment, yea there is money to be made, and getting the inside scoop of all the new arrival stuff.

Cons: you have to wear a dress code (yes i love to dress nicely, but dont tell me I have to!), really hard to find customers that would even keep using Mary Kay products (youth now a days see Mary Kay as an 'old lady' company), they are very into push push push theory (before I worked for them boy I got hounded by a MK rep to join for over a year she called me almost every month telling me how great it is to join and if I said now she would push on more make-up on me - I'll buy the darn stuff when I want too!), and last they are very pushy ladies and they do teach their new consultants to be that way "but in a nice way" HA! I can promise if you ask anyone on 'Yahoo Answers' or on the streets what they thought about a Mary Kay consultant they would say "They are just really snobby pushy ladies"

Personally I love the make-up, it does wonders for me! I go and buy and ebay now just cause I am not hounded like I have been.

I was a MK consultant a few years back and I don't really think it's a cult. It's a little old fashioned yes. You have to wear pantyhose, a faceful of makeup, the women have big hair, and you can't wear pants. The directors are slightly crazy but in an excited way. The company itself is actually a great one if you are willing to put in the effort and time to be a consultant.

Hi, I think its a great business. I've been a consultant for 2 years now and found great success in it. There are meetings to go to, to help with training also. You just have to find a great director and it will work out. You also have to have an outgoing personality and not get frustrated when someone says no to you. It is fun but has its challenges as any business does.

I am a rep for a similarly structured company called Arbonne. It is actually a great type of business to be with. Think of it like buying into a well established franchise, except your initial investment is very small. (ie. McDonalds franchise= $1mil avg vs. Arbonne business= $29 to start up!) The bad rep comes from pyramids which actually provide no product or service.

My aunt was a consultant for a while, don't believe she is anymore...but I never got any negative vibes about it from her. The only cult-like vibes I get from anyone in my family is my brother...the Jehovah's Witness.
