I would feel inclined to spray medicinal grade alcohol disinfectant into its workings, but something tells me that would turn it into a flame thrower. I am doing this because anything that blows air accumulates massive amounts of germs and then blows them out big time. Any ideas? What could I do without torching the house?

If you feel you need to disinfect your air conditioner, it would be safer to use a mixture of bleach and water and spray that into your inside coils. Any excess should drip down into the condensate pan and drian outside. I would do this with the blower off, so you don't short out any of the electrical components. Allow everything to dry before you start it back up.

First you need to clean the A/C. vacuum out any dust. Then purchase a hypoallergenic filter and replace the old one. This doesn't disinfect the machine but it does keep the unit running cleaner using less energy and the new filter should be sufficient to clean the fibers and dust from the air.
If you feel that this is not sufficient you could go out and buy a new A/C.
Good Luck...
