The other day, when turning very tightly it made a popping sound. Now it does not react as if the hubs are locked but it is making a strange rattling sound in the front end. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't know specifically how the Jeep Cheroke locks and unlocks it's hubs, but I do know if you try to drive these type of vehicles that aren't designed with full time four wheel drive, you can end up putting wear on the transfer case and screw something up. If you can't get it back out of 4 wheel drive, you should take it to your shop or dealer.

well, are you in 4wd? becuase unless you have selec trac 4wd, you cant use it on the street. The cherokee has a dana 30 vacuum disconnect front axle, which is ALWAYS spinning with the transfer case until you pull the 4wd lever to lock it.
